Tragic Loss in Kulgam Encounter
In Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, two soldiers lost their lives during an encounter with terrorists on the ninth day of Operation Akal. Officials confirmed the incident, which also left two additional security personnel injured, bringing the total number of wounded to ten in one of the region's longest-running anti-terror operations. The fallen soldiers have been identified as Lance Naik Prithpal Singh and Soldier Harminder Singh. The Chinar Corps paid tribute to these brave individuals, stating that their ultimate sacrifice will always inspire others. The Indian Army expressed its heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the grieving families, announcing that the operation is still ongoing.
Continued Operations Against Terrorists
More than five terrorists have reportedly been killed during this operation, which commenced on August 1 after security forces received intelligence about the presence of militants in the forested area of Akhal. According to military sources, at least three terrorists are believed to be hiding in dense forests, utilizing natural caves as their hideouts. Security forces have established a tight cordon and are engaged in ongoing confrontations with the militants in the thick woods. The challenging terrain, characterized by dense bushes and caves, has prolonged the operation. To locate the terrorists, security forces have deployed drones and helicopters, while para commandos assist in neutralizing the hidden militants.
Impact on Local Residents
Since the operation began, intense gunfire and explosions have been a constant occurrence, as the army faces off against well-armed and highly trained Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists equipped with night vision devices and long-range rifles. Residents of Akhal village have started relocating to safer areas, particularly affecting children and women who have been traumatized by the ongoing violence. Authorities have appointed nodal officers to assist local residents and coordinate emergency responses.
Increased Anti-Terror Operations
Following the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam on April 22, security forces have intensified their anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. These attacks, carried out by Pakistan-based militants, resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, mostly tourists. The operation, named Mahadev, was initiated after security forces eliminated Lashkar terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam massacre in the Dachigam area of Srinagar. The next day, on July 29, another operation called Shiv Shakti led to the elimination of two more terrorists. Since the April 22 attacks, approximately 20 high-profile terrorists have been neutralized.
