The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday (August 9) excluded 334 non-recognized political parties from the registered list. After this action, there are now only 6 national parties and 67 regional parties left in the country, while the number of registered non-recognized parties has come down to 2,520. 6 national parties include Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)) and National People’s Party (NPP). At the same time, 67 parties like Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal are recorded in the list of Election Commission as regional parties.
The Election Commission clarified that the parties removed from the list will no longer be eligible for any benefits received under the Income Tax Act, 1961, Election mark (Reservation and Allocation) Order, 1968 and Public Representation Act, 1951 under Section 29B and 29C. However, these parties have been given 30 days to appeal.
In June 2025, ECI directed the Chief Electoral Officers of the states and union territories to verify 345 non-recognized parties. In this process, the authorities issued condolence notices to these parties, conducted a personal hearing and examined the records. Investigation revealed that 334 parties were not following the set standards. The Commission removed them from the list based on reports and recommendations.
The Election Commission said in a press release that the registration of national, regional and non-recognized parties is under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. According to the rules, if a party does not contest elections for 6 consecutive years, its registration can be canceled. Also, at the time of registration, the party has to give information like name, address, list of officials and it is mandatory to give immediate information to the Commission about any change in them.
