
Bangkok: Nisha (54 kg) and Muskan (57 kg) at the ongoing Under-19 Asian Boxing Championships in Thailand’s capital Bangkok won the gold medal on Sunday and demonstrated India’s growing dominance in young women boxing. Five other boxers won silver medals.
Nine of the 10 women boxers participating in the under-19 event have won medals. It consists of 2 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals. This success of the players will showcase India as an emerging power with countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and China.
Nisha opened a gold medal account for India in the second match of the day. He won 4: 1 in the third and final rounds against China’s Sirui Yang. Muskan then won the second consecutive gold medal for India. He defeated Kazakhstan’s Ayazan Ermec with a divided decision of 3: 2.
Under-19 and Under-22 Asian Boxing Championships are being held simultaneously. It offers India’s emerging stars a platform to demonstrate their skills and determination against Asia’s most difficult rivals.
India has sent a strong party of 40 boxers. Apart from champion boxers, it also includes boxers who performed well in domestic circuits. Three more boxers in the men’s finals will enter the field on Sunday. There are also 13 medals in India in the Under-22 category, with five boxers competing for the gold medal on Monday.
Among other Indian women who competed for the gold medal on Sunday, Winnie lost to Sewar Mamatova in Uzbekistan in a 60 kg final. Among the upper weight sections, Aarti Kumari (75 kg) lost to China’s Tongtong Gu. Kritika Vasan (80 kg) suffered a defeat against Kurale Yaginbikeji of Kazakhstan and Parchi Tokas (80+ kg) against Sobirakhon Shakhobidinova in Uzbekistan.
