Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), now the number of subsidized LPG cylinders received by the beneficiaries has been reduced from 12 to 12 cylinders. This means that now a family will get a subsidy of ₹ 300 on a maximum of 9 refill cylinders in the whole year. Those using 5 kg cylinders will be given proportionate subsidy. The government has taken this decision due to increasing international pressure at domestic LPG prices and the huge losses of oil companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum). These companies will be repaid in 12 installments of about ₹ 30,000 crore in the financial year of 2025-26 so that they can keep the prices of LPG affordable and stable. Though the number of cylinders has been reduced, but the subsidy on the cylinders has now been reduced to ₹ 300 per cylinder, which is applied from October 2023. This new system may lead to some changes in the attainment of cylinders of the beneficiaries, but it is the government’s endeavor that consumers should be protected by the instability of the global market and there is no disruption in the supply of LPG. Ujjwala scheme was started in 2016, aims to provide LPG connections to poor families, especially women without deposit. The 2.0 version of the scheme also provides first refill and stoves free. In previous years, the consumption of the per capita cylinder of families associated with the scheme has also increased. In the intervening, the number of subsidized cylinders received under the Ujjwala scheme has now been reduced from 12 to 9, so that the deficit of government oil companies can be repaid and LPG prices can be kept stable. Along with this, a subsidy of ₹ 300 will continue on the cylinder, which will provide relief to poor families.
