The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning to anyone who is planning to travel internationally in the near future.

As the British government's foreign affairs and policy department, the FCDO provides regular updates, keeping people in the loop on all things travel.

And in a new post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, the FCDO shared a warning. The alert reads: "Criminal gangs are known to pressure people into carrying drugs. Always pack your own luggage and do not carry anything through customs for someone else."

Text on a graphic within the post adds: "They're going home. You're not. Do not carry anything through customs for anyone else".

A link included within the update further explains that many Brits have been caught carrying cannabis out of Thailand. Foreign Office guidance continues: "There have been arrests of British nationals caught transiting through airports in other countries.

"Many international airports have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items, which may be used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers."

It adds that if you are caught carrying cannabis in other countries, you can be given a long prison sentence and, in some countries, the death penalty.

FCDO information goes on to say: "Legal processes before court hearings can be long and expensive. It can take many months for a case to go to trial."
