WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature for Android that will allow users to send motion photos. According to a report, the feature has been spotted in the latest beta version and may be available to some beta testers. Through this, users will be able to send photos that capture movement and audio before and after taking a shot. Apart from this, according to the report, the platform is also working on usernames that can be used instead of sharing numbers.
WhatsApp may soon get motion photos support.
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the platform is testing motion photos support. This new feature was first seen in the WhatsApp beta 2.25.22.29 update for Android, which is now available on Google Play. Beta testers can access it and try it. It may take a few days to roll out to all beta testers.
According to the screenshots shared, motion photos will be represented by a new icon — with the play button surrounded by a ring and a small circle. This icon will appear on the image selection interface, from which users can select an image from the gallery and send it to someone.
Tapping on this icon, appearing in the top right corner, will allow the photo to be sent as motion photos. WhatsApp has described motion photos as 'a recording of the moments just before and after taking the photo'. It will also support audio.
It is worth noting that motion photos are already a feature present in many Android smartphones. Samsung offers it as Motion Photos, and Google Pixel offers it as Top Shop. Only those devices will be able to capture them in which this feature is already present, but any device will be able to see them.
When this feature is rolled out for everyone, the problem of converting motion photos into video files when sent will be eliminated. WhatsApp has not yet said when it will be brought out of beta.
