Grigor Dimitrov has officially pulled out of the upcoming US Open, having struggled with an injury since Wimbledon earlier this year. The Bulgarian had been on the verge of a famous victory over eventual champion Jannik Sinner, but was forced to retire from the round-of-16 clash and hasn't been seen in competitive action since.

Dimitrov injured his pectoral muscle in the Sinner clash and has been unable to recover from the problem in time to line up at Flushing Meadows later this month. It brings to an end a streak of 58 Slam main draws in a row, which had been the longest active streak on the ATP Tour.

As a result of Dimitrov pulling out of the US Open, Alejandro Tabilo has been named as the 34-year-old's replacement. The world No.103 has competed in both the Australian and French Open main draws this year, reaching the first and second rounds respectively.

Speaking shortly after his Wimbledon withdrawal, Dimitrov posted on social media: "Sometimes the heart wants to keep going... but the universe has a different plan for us," wrote Dimitrov in a post on Instagram, which included a photo of himself in a hospital bed. Having to withdraw from this match at Wimbledon was one of the most painful moments of my career.

"Thank you for the overwhelming wave of love - from family, friends, fans, colleagues, to the entire tennis community... your messages have genuinely lifted me through these hard times. Thank you all. Truly. Recovery starts now. I'll see you all soon. G."

It was initially expected that Dimitrov would recover from the injury quickly, with talk of him being involved in the North American hard-court swing. However, it transpired that the original prognosis was worse than first thought, with Dimitrov firstly withdrawing from the Canadian Open and then the Cincinnati Open.

His manager, Georgi Stoimenov, appeared to float the idea of Dimitrov not being available for the US Open last month, claiming it was unlikely he'd be fully fit. Now, just a couple of weeks before the action in New York gets underway, his absence has been confirmed by the tournament organisers.

As well as losing his impressive Grand Slam streak, it's likely Dimitrov will also fall outside of the top 30 in the ATP rankings. He will have the chance to climb back up the standings at tournaments like the China Open and Shanghai Masters, but only if the Bulgarian star is fit enough to compete.
