India Road Safety: Rajasthan is once again in the headlines with the painful news of road accident. The latest case is in Dausa district, where 11 people died on the spot and many were injured in a severe road accident. The accident caused by high speed and negligence, not only left a never -filling wounds for the victim families, but also brought out a terrible picture of the growing road accidents in Rajasthan. So let us tell about the 10 states of the country, where, every year, most occurs.
11 thousand deaths every year in Rajasthan
Statistics up to 2022 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) show that Rajasthan is among the 10 states in the country where the deaths due to road accidents are the highest. Every year about 11 thousand people lose their lives on the road. This figure should be a matter of concern for any state, but the situation is getting worse rather than improving.
Country's road safety record worrying
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari admitted in Parliament in February 2025 that India's road safety record is 'very bad'. He said- "The goal of reducing road accidents was far away, the accidents have increased further." According to Gadkari, when he took charge of the ministry, by 2024, a target was targeted to reduce road accidents and deaths by 50%, but the reality came out contrary.
Frightening truth in statistics
According to 2022 data, 4,61,312 road accidents occurred across the country, in which 1,68,491 people died and 4,43,366 people were injured. Only 1,51,997 accidents occurred on the National Highway, which is about 33% of the total accidents.
1,06,682 accidents occurred on the state highway and 2,02,633 on other roads. Talking about the deaths, 61,038 people were killed on the National Highway, while 41,012 deaths were registered on the state highway and 66,441 on other roads.
Rajasthan's position between 2018 and 2022, 51,280 deaths in Rajasthan occurred in road accidents. This number comes after big states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The geography of Rajasthan, long highway networks and the number of growing trains make it sensitive for road safety.
Dausa accident a warning
- The recent accident in Dausa district is proof that speed and negligence are proving fatal. The negligence of the truck and the driver of the bus involved in the accident destroyed many families. Local people say that speed control and lack of police patrolling on the highway are a major cause of such accidents.
What should be in the direction of solution
- Experts believe that work should be done at three levels to reduce road accidents - infrastructure improvement: road design, divider, and blind spots. Strict rules: overspeed, driving by drinking alcohol and strict penalty on drivers with helmets/seat belts. Public awareness: Road safety campaign at village and school-college level.
- Dausa accident is not just a news, but a warning that even if road safety is not taken care of, figures may be more frightening in the coming years. Every year 11 thousand deaths in Rajasthan show that now it is not only the government, but the responsibility of every citizen to control the speed and to follow the rules.
