A new controversy has arisen in Bangladesh over the proposed general election in February next year. National Citizen Party (NCP) chief convenor Naseeruddin Patwari has clearly stated that elections cannot be held until electoral and political reforms are completed.
Addressing the National Youth Conference held on the occasion of International Youth Day at Krishibid Institute in Farmgate, Dhaka, Patwari said, “If elections were conducted without completing the reform, this government will have to go to the grave and return the bodies of my brothers who sacrificed their lives for reforms.” The statement has come out from the local newspaper Jugantar as saying.
In the program Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joint secretary Shahid Uddin Chaudhary Annie and radical Islamic Party Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
NCP convenor Nahid Islam said that his party had given concessions in last year and July declaration, but “one percent” will not be compromised on the July charter. He said, “We will participate in the election only when the goals of the July Charter will be met. Change is necessary, there will be no compromise on this. No party can come to power without implementing the promises of July Charter.”
Significantly, BNP has welcomed the decision to hold elections in February 2026, while Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded the implementation of the proportionate representation (PR) system and warned of agitation for it.
Naseeruddin Patwari also criticized the country’s intelligence agency Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and warned that if the agency did not work properly, the NCP would vandalize its offices.
He said, “This agency runs with public money, but the public does not know how much it costs. There is no accountability, no responsibility, no transparency.
Their job is only to scare people. If the situation remains the same, then we will break the headquarters, not only the inquiry room. If DGFI has to live in Bangladesh, improvement is necessary. ”
There is confusion about the next general election in Bangladesh. The parties that remove Hasina in association with Mohammad Yunus are now colliding with the reform proposals and the date of election.
