No schools will be closed in UP even after the dropout and merger plan. Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Basic Education Sandeep Singh told the Assembly on Tuesday that the state government has not decided to close a single school. The minister gave this information in response to questions asked by Samajwadi Party MLAs Pankaj Patel, Anil Pradhan, and Prabhu Narayan Singh Yadav during the Question Hour on the second day of the monsoon session.
Pankaj Patel claimed that 88 lakh children have dropped out of school due to poor academic standards and expressed concern over the recent merger of some schools. Minister Sandeep Singh clarified in his reply that no school is being closed. However, he said that institutions with fewer than 50 students are being merged with other schools located within a radius of one kilometer to ensure smooth teaching.
How many schools, how many teachers?
The minister further said that children are enrolled in schools at the age of 6, and children between three and 6 years are encouraged to go to Anganwadi centers for early education. He said that there are 10,493,389 students registered in the primary schools of the state, with 417,886 sanctioned teacher posts, of which 338,590 are currently filled. The minister said that there are 4,314,803 students in upper primary schools, with 162,198 sanctioned teacher posts and 120,860 teachers working.
How many government primary schools are in UP?
There are more than 1.3 lakh government primary (up to class 5), upper primary (classes 5-8), and composite schools (classes 1-8) in Uttar Pradesh. More than 1.67 crore students were enrolled in them during the academic year 2023-24. At the same time, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on July 25 ordered to maintain the status quo on the merger of primary schools in Sitapur district, as discrepancies were found in the documents submitted earlier regarding the merger of schools.
