Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a system through which online payments can be made easily through mobile. The number of people using UPI in India, which started in 2016, has increased a lot today. People in the country are paying crores of rupees every month through UPI. The most surprising thing is that people are using UPI to pay EMI of loans.

This has been revealed in the July Ecosystem Statistics data released by the National Payment Corporation of India. According to the latest data, a total UPI payment of Rs 93,857 crore has been made to debt collection agencies in July. These agencies include government banks, private banks and non-banking financial institutions giving small loans. The report tells according to the merchant category how much and where people are spending.

More UPI on petrol and ration too

After this, people are using UPI payments the most to buy essential goods. A total of about Rs 65 thousand crore has been paid online in grocery stores and supermarkets. After this, people are scanning QR codes to fill petrol and diesel. About 35 thousand crores have been paid to fuel stations in July. Not only this, people have also made UPI payments of Rs 23,497 crore for electricity, gas, water and sanitation.

UPI transactions also increased across the border

India's use of UPI is increasing rapidly for cross-border transactions. More than 6 lakh transactions have been done in the first four months of the current financial year itself, which is only 1.5 lakh less than such transactions in the entire 2024-25. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha on Monday that a total of 6.01 lakh cross-border UPI transactions were done in the current financial year till July. Their number was 7.55 lakh in the entire 2024-25. In terms of value, cross-border UPI transactions worth Rs 169.29 crore have taken place so far this fiscal, while last year this figure was Rs 258.53 crore.
