New Green Initiative in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated a new Miyawaki forest in the capital area, promoting the 'A Tree for Mother' initiative aimed at urban residents.
This project, a collaboration between BMC and the Chandaka Forest Division, was officially launched on Wednesday, covering 1.5 acres of government land in Ward No 6. The initiative plans to plant 11,000 trees using the rapid Miyawaki method to enhance greenery and mitigate the effects of rising temperatures due to urban expansion.
The plantation event was attended by BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, Commissioner Chanchal Rana, additional commissioners, Chandaka DFO, local corporators, BMC and forest department personnel, media representatives, NGO officials, and members of women's self-help groups.
Mayor Das mentioned that the site will not only act as an urban green space but will also include amenities like a walking track. She indicated that similar eco-friendly areas will be established in other appropriate locations throughout the city, adhering to legal guidelines.
Previously, BMC had initiated a distinctive tree planting campaign by placing 108 Bael saplings near Jhara Pond in the Pokhariput region.
