New Delhi: Shubman Gill took to the responsibility of leading the Indian Test team like a duck to water, says Yuvraj Singh, pointing out that his superlative performance rubbed on to the rest of team-mates.

Gill was named skipper following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and he led the team with authority, scoring a series-high 754 runs with four centuries, including a double hundred.

The 25-year-old scored the most runs by an Indian skipper in a series that India rallied to draw 2-2, before which the appointment sparked a lot of scepticism.

“There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy (Gill) became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It’s just unbelievable that when you’re given responsibility, how you take it,” Yuvraj told the ICC.

“So, very proud of them (Indian team). I certainly feel it’s a win for us, although it’s a drawn series, because it’s a young team. And it’s not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself.”

‘Lot of pressure’

India were weakened by injuries to keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, seamers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, with star pacer Jasprit Bumrah featuring in only three games owing to workload management.

But the young team fought valiantly to pull off a thrilling six-run win in the fifth Test to square the series. Yuvraj had mentored Gill in his younger days praised how the team responded to the challenge, even after trailing.

“It’s just fantastic because I felt when you have a young team going to England, it’s a lot of pressure. You’re filling the boots of somebody like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, it’s not easy. The guys took it head-on,” he said.

“The moment in the tournament was when India drew the Test series. I’ve never seen, in a very long time, Washington and Jadeja got hundreds and drew a Test match.

“That speaks volumes. Obviously Jadeja has been there for a long time. But I think Washington Sundar, as a youngster coming into the team, it was incredible to do what he did,” Yuvraj added.
