Passenger vehicle sales see marginal dip in July as demand stays muted

The domestic passenger vehicle (PV) market showed signs of strain in July 2025 with wholesales dipping a marginal 0.2% yearonyear despite overall stability in domestic automobile dispatches across segments.

According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Thursday, total PV dispatches to dealers stood at 340,772 units, slightly lower than the 341,510 units recorded in July 2024, highlighting cautious consumer sentiment amid broader market stability.

Twowheeler and threewheeler segments record strong growth

In the twowheeler segment, the total sales grew at around 8.7% to 1.57 million units during the month as against 1.44 million units in the same month last year. The sales of scooter grew 16.2% to 643,169 units compared to 553,642 in the yearago period while motorcycle sales were 4.7% higher at 890,107 units from 850,489 units.

The total threewheeler sales in the domestic market rose 17.5% to 69,403 units as against 59,073 units in the same month last year.

Festive season expected to boost demand

Despite the subdued performance so far this year, SIAM expects demand momentum to pick up with the onset of the festive season.

“With the advent of the festive season beginning with Onam festivities in the latter part of August, the Indian auto industry remains cautiously optimistic for the demand momentum to pick up in the coming months,” Rajesh Menon, director general, SIAM, said.

Overall, the total sales across categories grew 7.3% to 1.98 million units in July compared to 1.84 million units in July 2024.

In terms of exports, the total PV exports during the month grew 8.7%  to around 67,292 units as compared with 61,929 units.

Total twowheeler exports grew 33.5%  to 4,33,873 units from 3,24,908 units in the corresponding month last year, the SIAM data show. 

The exports of threewheelers was 47% higher at 39,787 units last month as against 27,074 units in July 2024.
