Steeped in a fascinating past and vibrant heritage, Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is a true haven for history buffs, archaeologists, lovers of art and architecture, and, of course, curious travelers.

Adorned with ancient monuments, majestic palaces, sacred shrines, and museums that echo the tales of a bygone era, Bhopal stands tall among the most sought-after tourist destinations in the state.

While the city is undeniably a treasure trove of historical and archaeological wonders, it also offers a variety of recreational activities, ensuring even casual holidaymakers have plenty to enjoy. Here’s our exclusive travel guide to Bhopal, featuring eight must-visit attractions.

# Upper Lake and Lower Lake

Known locally as Bhojtal, the Upper Lake is one of Bhopal’s star attractions—perfect for a leisurely picnic with friends or family. Nearby lies the Chhota Talab, or Lower Lake, and together they form the Bhoj Wetlands.

Beyond their scenic charm, these lakes hold deep religious, social, and cultural significance for locals and supply nearly 40% of the city’s water. During festivals, devotees gather along the banks to offer prayers.

A Legend from the Past

According to local lore, the lakes date back to the reign of the great Parmara ruler, Raja Bhoj (1005–1055 AD). Suffering from a severe skin ailment, the king sought the advice of a saint who instructed him to create a tank by merging water from 365 streams and bathe in it. The resulting Bada Talab not only cured him but also became one of India’s oldest man-made lakes. In 2011, it was renamed Bhojtal in his honor.

# Van Vihar National Park

Spread over 445 hectares and established in 1979, Van Vihar National Park is a popular getaway for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photographers. Located right next to the Upper Lake, it is one of Central India’s most visited wildlife spots.

# Bhojpur Temple

A short 28 km from Bhopal lies the remarkable Bhojpur Temple (Bhojeshwar Temple), built in the 11th century under Raja Bhoj’s reign. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is often hailed as the Somnath of the East.

Sacred Significance
The temple houses the world’s largest Shivlinga carved from a single rock—standing 7.5 ft high and 18 ft in circumference—drawing pilgrims from across the country.

# National Museum of Mankind

Also called the Tribal Habitat Museum, this one-of-a-kind institution was established in 1977 and later renamed Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya in 1993. Sprawling over 200 acres in Shamla Hills, near the Upper Lake, the museum preserves prehistoric rock shelters dating back to the early Stone Age—making it a must-visit for history and anthropology enthusiasts.

# State Archaeological Museum

Located close to the Museum of Mankind, the State Archaeological Museum was inaugurated in 2005. It showcases Madhya Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage through an impressive display of rare paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts.

# Birla Museum

Nestled in the peaceful surroundings of Arera Hills, the Birla Museum houses artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Highlights include rare tools used by early humans and a detailed scale model of the Bhimbetka rock shelters, offering a glimpse into prehistoric art and life.

# Lakshmi Narayan Temple

No trip to Bhopal is complete without visiting the Lakshmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir), one of 18 temples built across India by the Birla family. Perched atop Arera Hills, the temple’s sandy-yellow façade contrasts beautifully with its lush lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and fountains. From here, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the city’s lakes while soaking in the temple’s serene, spiritual atmosphere.
