Amid the increasing tariff controversy between the US and India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clear message to the countrymen in an important address on Friday (August 15), saying that the time has come to prove its quality and ability in the global market. He said in his address to the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of 79th Independence Day, “It’s time to create history. We have to rule the world market. We have to reduce production costs. We have to show our strength to the world with quality products.” Modi said, “The price should be low, our mantra should be more. Economic selfishness is increasing. Leave the concern of other countries, now we have to move forward to fulfill our goals.”

On August 6, US President Donald Trump, while intensifying his tariff invasion against India, imposed an additional 25 percent of Indian goods due to continuous import of Russian oil by New Delhi and later doubled it to 50 percent.

India has strongly condemned the move, calling the move inappropriate, unjust and illegal. The government believes that it may suffer a serious shock to areas such as textile, marine products and leather exports. Prime Minister Modi had made it clear on Thursday that India would not bow down to economic pressure.

After this move, India, along with Brazil, has come under the purview of the highest 50 percent tariff in the US. Many countries, including Russia and China, have also described this move of Trump administration as ‘illegal business pressure’.

In his speech, the Prime Minister called for the creation of ‘Samarth Bharat’ and said that as freedom fighters dreamed of “independent India”, we should focus on the goal of strong India today. He said, “We should put our energy not to degrade others, but to strengthen ourselves.”
