Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has hinted that Mason Mount could be deployed in a central midfield role if the club fails to bolster their ranks in that area.

The Red Devils have all but given up on their pursuit of Brighton's Carlos Baleba this summer, leaving them with just four recognised central midfielders.

Toby Collyer is set to join West Brom on loan, Casemiro's contract is due to expire next year, and Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have only played together in central midfield ten times.

Bruno Fernandes is tipped to start in midfield against Arsenal on Sunday, while Casemiro featured in three of United's five pre-season matches. Ugarte and Mainoo were paired together for the victory over West Ham United in New Jersey and the stalemate with Everton in Atlanta.

When quizzed about his plans to sign a midfielder, Amorim responded: "I'm really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players.

"Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different. But then we are going to find out during the season. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League."

On the subject of Rasmus Hojlund's future, Amorim simply said "we will see". Hojlund is reportedly open to a move to AC Milan following the arrival of fellow forward Benjamin Sesko.

Since Hojlund expressed his desire to remain at Old Trafford following his double strike in United's pre-season clash with Bournemouth in Chicago, he found himself relegated to the substitutes' bench against Everton in Atlanta and failed to feature entirely in their final warm-up match against Fiorentina.

Hojlund faces the prospect of missing out on the United squad entirely for Sunday's encounter with Arsenal as Joshua Zirkzee has returned to full team training.

"He's one more option," Amorim remarked regarding Hojlund. "We will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player."
