A sonic boom rocked residents' homes in southeast London and south Essex this morning after the RAF launched a Quick Reaction Alert Force to intercept a civilian plane which has landed at Stansted. One resident posted on social media: "Did anyone else just hear a massive bang in Bexleyheath? It sounded like a sonic boom." Others in areas including Billericay, Chelmsford, and West Horndon took to X to share their accounts of the loud bang, which some said made their houses "shake." Two RAF Eurofighter Typhoons were seen escorting an aircraft over the eastern England region at approximately 11.30am this morning.
A Royal Air Force spokesperson confirmed: "We can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched today to investigate a civilian aircraft which was not in contact with air traffic control, communications were re-established and the aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted. The Typhoons are returning to base."
