Severe Rainfall Hits Mumbai
Mumbai, the financial hub of India, experienced significant rainfall overnight, coinciding with the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations on Saturday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that the city received over 100 mm of rain from 8 AM on Friday until 4 AM on Saturday.
Rainfall Measurements
The city recorded 99.61 mm of rain, while the Eastern and Western Suburbs saw 142.80 mm and 144.57 mm, respectively. The surrounding districts of Palghar, Thane, and Raigad also faced heavy downpours. Airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued warnings regarding possible delays at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, although suburban train services have not reported any disruptions.
Forecast and Alerts
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall is expected to continue, with heavy to very heavy showers likely in the Konkan region and adjacent areas from August 15 to 20. A red alert has been issued for Raigad, while Mumbai and Thane are under an orange alert.
Waterlogging Issues
Following the intense rainfall, several low-lying areas experienced significant waterlogging, particularly in flood-prone suburbs. Locations such as Sion-King Circle, Bandra, Vile Parle, Andheri, Vashi, and Vasai-Virar reported severe water accumulation. Visuals from Sion station showed submerged train tracks, while vehicles navigated through flooded streets in Bandra and Andheri.
Minimal Disruption to Services
Unlike previous years, the heavy rains did not cause major disruptions. Suburban train services continued with only minor delays, and major roads remained relatively clear of traffic jams. Officials credited effective drainage systems and pre-monsoon preparations for the smooth functioning of transport services.
Public Advisory from Mumbai Police
The Mumbai Police have issued a public advisory urging residents to exercise caution. With an Orange Alert in place, they advised against non-essential travel due to waterlogging and reduced visibility. Police personnel are on standby to assist in emergencies, and helplines have been activated for quick responses.
