Kerala Scerte Subhas Bose Handbook Controversy

The Kerala State Educational Research and Training Council (SCERT) faced great embarrassment when the handbook for fourth grade teachers revealed serious factual mistakes about the freedom struggle superstar Subhash Chandra Bose. It was written in the handbook that Bose left India for fear of the British. This objectionable line was first noticed by the teachers and immediately informed the SCERT.

It was first mentioned in the handbook that Bose became Congress President and later he established the forward block. But then it was incorrectly added that Bose migrated to Germany fearing the British and later formed the Azad Hind Fauj (INA). As soon as the teachers received a copy of this handbook, immediately exposed this mistake.

After criticism, SCERT took back the disputed book and released the revised version. The amendment removed the line “afraid of the British”. At the same time, the institution said that an internal investigation has been started in the matter to find out how such a serious mistake has come out of the review process.

Teachers and parents said that such historical mistakes, if they do not get caught in time, can present wrong facts to young children. Subhash Chandra Bose is considered one of the biggest leaders of India’s freedom movement.

Historians say that Bose’s leaving India was not a result of any fear, but it was a strategic initiative to raise global support against British rule.

SCERT has assured that strict quality checks will be implemented to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in future. Kerala SCERT is an autonomous institution of the General Education Department of the state, which works on the lines of NCERT at the national level and holds the responsibility of educational subjects from pre-primary to higher secondary level.
