ECI Slams Political Parties Over Voter List Verification 2025

On Saturday (August 16), it has been mentioned by the Election Commission through a press release that the role of political parties in purification of the voter list is helpful, while some political parties and their BLA did not investigate the voter lists at the appropriate time. This is being seen directly as a target on the Congress and the Indian alliance, which accused them of scam in the voter list. However, if there is any errors in the voter list through a press release, the Election Commission has talked about giving appropriate time and opportunity to voters and political parties to improve it.

The Election Commission said, the process of preparing the Electoral Roll for India’s parliamentary and assembly elections is a multi-level and decentralized system, which is defined by law. According to the Election Commission (ECI) guidelines, Deputy Collector (SDM) level officers, called Election Registration Officer (ERO), prepare voter list with the help of booth level officers (BLOS) and ensure its purity.

The Election Commission said that after the publication of the initial (draft) voter list, its digital and physical copies are made available to all political parties and it is also put on the Election Commission website. Subsequently, a period of one month is given to voters and political parties, in which they can register claims and objections.

Even after the final voter list is published, its copies are given to political parties and are available on the website. If someone gets an error, there is a two -level appeal system for him. In this, the first appeal can be made to the District Magistrate (DM) and the second appeal can be made by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the State/Union Territory.

The Commission says that the transparency of this entire process is its biggest feature. But recently some political parties and individuals have raised questions about errors in voter lists, including lists of old elections. The Commission clarified that the right time to raise these issues was the same claims and objections, for which the list is already shared with parties and candidates.

The Election Commission said, “If political parties and their booth level agents (BLAS) had carefully examined the voter list and told the errors, they could have been corrected by the concerned EROS/SDMS. The Election Commission at any time welcomes the investigation conducted by political parties and voters. This process will make lists and strengthen democracy.”

Overall, the Commission reiterated that the purity of the voter list is the foundation of democracy and active participation of all political parties and voters is necessary in it.
