Business owners have been advised by the police to greet customers when they enter the shop in a bid to reduce skyrocketing shoplifting rates. Lancashire Constabulary issued the advice of saying 'hello' to customers to deter thieves as part of their new retail crime strategy. Approximately 1,400 reports of theft take place every day in the UK, translating to nearly three thefts every minute.

The new scheme to reduce shoplifting figures in Lancashire, labelled Operation Value, includes urging businesses to hire "customer greeters". The designated member of staff would greet and speak to people who enter the store in a bid to put them off stealing. The force issued a digital guide for retailers, which is titled "How to Deter a Shoplifter".

It said: "By greeting genuine shoppers, not only does this provide a positive impression of your store, it also deters potential shoplifters. An offender is less likely to shoplift if they sense that they are to be seen and noticed by staff."

Businesses have also been advised to hire additional security staff who are visible on the premises during the most "vulnerable" times of the day.

Elsewhere in the guidance, Lancashire Constabulary suggests putting up warning signs around the store which say thieves would be reported. The authority recommends asking any suspicious customers if they require any help too.

The force has offered signs and activity that employees should look out for which indicates someone may be stealing. "A shoplifter is not always creeping round like in the movies," they wrote.

"They can sometimes be trying to keep a low profile, and avoiding attention. They might look anxious or flushed, looking around the shop constantly to see if they are being watched."

They continued: "Their clothing might also give them away.

"For example, if they are wearing heavy, baggy clothing in warm weather this might indicate they are using this baggy clothing to hide stolen items.

"Always be sure they've taken something before you speak to them - and only if you feel it's safe to do so".
