South Korea’s F-1-D Workation Visa, also known as the Digital Nomad Visa, may make your fantasy of working from a café by the Han River or brainstorming ideas while surrounded by Seoul’s neon-lit streets a reality.
This visa, which was introduced as a trial scheme on January 1, 2024, permits international experts to work for foreign firms and reside in South Korea for a maximum of two years. There is a catch, though: not everyone will be eligible due to the stringent qualifications and high income level.
The Fundamentals: How the F-1-D Visa for South Korea Operates
A maximum stay of two years is permitted with the possibility to renew the visa for an additional year after the initial one-year period. Processing typically takes 10 to 15 days; however, there may be some delays.
The main prerequisite is to make more than USD 66,000 annually, or around Rs 58 lakh, which is almost double South Korea’s per capita GNI. This guarantees that high-earning professionals and business owners are the target of the visa.
Who Is Eligible to Apply for a Work Visa in South Korea?
To qualify, you have to:
- 18 years of age or older
- Have worked in your profession for at least a year.
- Work for a firm outside of South Korea or operate your own business abroad.
- Work just from home; there are no local employment or opportunities for profit in Korea.
- Obtain permission from your employer to work overseas.
- Maintain medical insurance for the duration of your stay that covers at least Rs 83 lakh for treatment and repatriation.
Documents for Applicants from India
You will require:
- filled-out visa application with a picture
- A passport valid for at least six months
- A letter from your employer indicating that you work remotely
- Evidence of income (pay stubs, bank statements, and tax returns)
- Certificate of Indian criminal history (apostilled/notarized)
- criminal histories from other nations where they resided for at least one year within the previous five years
- Health insurance that complies with the regulations
How and Where to Apply for a Work Visa in South Korea
Indian nationals may apply at South Korean consulates or embassies in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, or New Delhi. Applications are accepted at local immigration offices by visitors who are already in Korea.
Actions to take:
1. Verify your eligibility.
2. Compile and apostille/translate papers.
3. Make an appointment at the consulate that is closest to you.
4. Pay the USD 45 application cost and submit it.
5. Await processing (no choice for expedited processing).
6. Within ninety days after approval, go to Korea and get an Alien Registration Card.
Rules for Families and Residency
With the right paperwork, spouses and kids under the age of 18 are welcome to join you. Permanent residence cannot be obtained with the visa. You have to depart or switch your visa type when the two years are over.
The F-1-D is more than just a visa for wealthy Indian remote workers; it’s a two-year permit to experience K-culture, see old towns, and operate in an environment surrounded by mountains, temples, and cutting-edge technology.
