Online thugs always keep finding new ways to rob people. Now they have found a way through which they can steal money from bank accounts without asking for OTP. Some such incidents have come to light in the last few days. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a warning regarding this fraudulent practice and advised people to be alert.

Scam without OTP
Usually, whenever an online payment is made, the transaction has to be authenticated through OTP. Scammers often obtain these passwords through different tricks. But now they have invented a new method, which is called the call merging scam. With this, they can rob people without asking for OTP. Earlier, they used to trap people through a missed call scam.

In a call merging scam, the fraudster calls someone and introduces himself as a representative of a job interview or an event. He says that your number has been given by a common friend or acquaintance. After this, he asks the victim to merge the calls, which makes the other person feel that someone is talking. But in reality, the second call is from the bank or credit card company, where OTP is being spoken. As soon as the victim answers the call, the OTP unknowingly reaches the scammer, and then they withdraw money from the account or card.

Usually, messages or calls are used to get OTP. Scammers prefer the call option so that their fraud can be done easily. When the victim merges the call, the OTP goes directly to the scammer, and he immediately withdraws money from the account.

How to stay safe?
The easiest way to avoid cyber criminals is to be cautious. Always ignore calls and messages from unknown numbers. If you use an Android smartphone, then you can turn on the spam detection feature in it. For this, go to the call settings and enable the spam call filter. This will reduce the risk of calls coming from unknown numbers to a great extent.
