Overview:

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have done well in his absence, and the decision-makers are likely to continue with them. Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead of Gill in the competition for the third opener.

A lot has been said about Shubman Gill’s place in T20Is. With the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee all set to announce the team for the Asia Cup, reports indicate that Gill is likely to be ignored as he doesn’t fit into the plans. The 25-year-old has had a terrific Test series as a batter and captain in England and has been scoring runs in the Indian Premier League. Despite his impressive numbers, Gill has been away from T20 matches since 2024.

A report in the Times of India has revealed that Gill is in the good books of head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI’s chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar. However, the BCCI is not satisfied with his performance in the T20 format.

“Gill is a top batter. The selectors and the head coach Gautam Gambhir are huge fans of his batting. He is rated as highly as Virat Kohli, but doesn’t fit in the shortest format. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have been terrific as openers, with Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav taking the next two spots. You can’t drop any of them,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Gill had a memorable IPL 2025, scoring 650 runs for the Gujarat Titans. Samson scored three hundreds last year, while Abhishek is the No.1 batter in the ICC Rankings for T20I batters. Abhishek amassed 135 runs off 54 balls against England.

Tilak has cemented his place as the No.3 batter after hitting consecutive centuries against South Africa. The Asia Cup 2025 starts on September 9.
