OpenAI has introduced a new, more affordable subscription tier in India called ChatGPT Go, priced at Rs 399 per month (around $4.60). The plan offers a significant upgrade over the free version and is designed to give Indian users wider access to some of ChatGPT’s most popular features.
What is Chatgpt Go?
The announcement was made by Nick Turley, OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT, on X (formerly Twitter): “We just launched ChatGPT Go in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features: 10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and 2x longer memory compared with our free tier. All for Rs. 399.”
Turley added that users in India will now see subscription prices in rupees and can make payments via UPI (Unified Payment Interface), a move likely aimed at improving accessibility.
Chatgpt Go vs other existing plans
This new tier is far more affordable than OpenAI’s other existing plans. The top-tier version of ChatGPT, ChatGPT Pro, is priced at Rs 19,900/month in India, while ChatGPT Plus, the mid-range plan, costs Rs 1,999/month.
“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users!” Turley said. “We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries.”
Last month, Turley revealed that ChatGPT now has over 700 million weekly users around the world, a big jump from 500 million in March. Since OpenAI added its improved image-generation feature in March, user activity in India has grown. CEO Sam Altman called AI adoption in India “amazing to watch”.

In a recent podcast with Zerodha cofounder Nikhil Kamath, Altman said that India is the company’s second biggest market. With the Go plan, the company is trying to cash in on that.
Earlier this year, Altman met with India's IT minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and discussed a plan to create a low-cost AI ecosystem.
The launch of ChatGPT Go comes at a time when other AI companies are also looking to attract Indian users. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free Pro subscriptions, while Google has introduced a year-long free AI Pro plan for Indian students.
