Virat Kohli, India’s ODI specialist and former captain, has been clicked in full practice mode ahead of the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia. The 36-year-old cricketer, away from competitive action since the IPL 2025 final, was seen undergoing rigorous batting drills at a private training facility. The images, now viral on social media, suggest a sharp focus on his return.

Kohli’s last professional outing was the historic IPL 2025 finale where Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinched their maiden title. An emotional Kohli had shed tears after the win. Since then, he stayed away from cricket, sparking intense speculation regarding his future in the national team.

Series Timeline and Retirement Speculation

India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in Australia starting October, and Kohli is expected to feature in the squad. This will be his first international appearance since retiring from Tests and T20Is. The ODI format remains his only active domain in international cricket.

Earlier this month, Kohli had shared an Instagram story with Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Ali after a net session. “Thanks for helping out with the hit brother. Always lovely to see you,” read his caption, hinting at preparation for the big tour.

Reports quoting BCCI sources have suggested that both Kohli and Rohit Sharma could step away from ODIs after the Australia series. If they plan to extend their careers till the 2027 ODI World Cup, participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy might be mandatory.

Following the Australian assignment, India will host South Africa for another three-match ODI series in December. The calendar for 2026 features engagements with New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, and the West Indies, ensuring substantial 50-over cricket ahead.
