Gardeners across the UK are being urged to put oranges out in their garden this week. A number of birds, including orioles, love to eat the citrus fruit and may flock to your garden if there are oranges.

According to Lori Vanover, an bird feeding expert from Birds and Blooms, birds such as thrushes, blackbirds, starlings, mockingbirds and woodpeckers are attracted to oranges. You don't even need a table or feeder to put the fruit out for the birds.

Lori said: "Perhaps one of the best things about feeding birds oranges is the low maintenance. You don't need a snazzy feeder.

"Simply hammer a nail to a deck railing or fencepost and stick an orange half to the nail. Or set a couple of orange halves right in your platform feeder. Easy peasy!"

Birds are attracted to oranges due to their bright colour and sweet taste. They love the high sugar content and appealing texture of the fruit.

Lori added: "If you're thinking of trying out fruit bird feeders, you'll want to learn what birds eat oranges. Also learn other fruits that attract birds."

She continued: "Orioles tend to steal the show in the backyard at fruit bird feeders because of their bright colours, but other fruit eating birds like oranges, too."

Oranges can help to attract a variety of birds to your garden, giving them important nutrients. However, they may also attract squirrels with experts recommending putting the fruit at a spot where they can't reach.

As well as oranges, birds in the UK also enjoy blueberries, raspberries, currants, aand blackberries. They are also fond of oranges, plums, apples, grapes and cherries.

However, it's important that gardeners remember to remove the core or seeds of a fruit before putting it out for birds. SOme dry fruits, such as raisins, are also a good option.
