South African star Matthew Breetzke continued the brilliant start to his ODI career during the first game of a three-match series between the Proteas and Australia on Tuesday (August 19) at the Cazaley Stadium in Cairna with a knock of 57 runs in 86 balls.
Breetzke was one of three South African players to score a half-century as the visitors posted a huge total of 296 on the board. Vice-captain Aiden Markram (82 of 81) and skipper Temba Bavuma (65 of 74) also completed the milestone. These are the first three visiting players in history to score a half-century at the venue..
Matthew Breetzke Creates History
Breetzke made his ODI debut in a tri-series match against New Zealand in February with a knock of 150 in just 148 balls in Lahore. The 26-year-old made a knock of 83 in 84 balls while playing Pakistan in the second ODI of his career at the National Stadium in Karachi.
The 26-year-old now has 290 runs to his name in three innings in his ODI career at an average of 96.66. The 26-year-old's tally is the highest by a player after playing three innings. He broke a long-standing record of England's Nick Knight, which had stood since 1996 and is the first player with over 270 runs in three innings.
Most Runs After Playing 3 ODIs
Infact, Breetzke's tally is also the highest by any player after four ODIs, even if he gets a duck in his next appearance. The record belonged to Bavuma, who is leading the Proteas in the ongoing match and has made 280 runs after playing four ODI matches.
Breeztke is only the fourth player and second from a full member nation to make a 50+ score in each of his first three appearances in the format after India's Navjot Singh Sidhu and the Dutch pair of Tom Cooper and Max O'Dowd.
Player | Runs |
Matthew Breetzke | 290 |
