If you rely on the UPI payments app for most of your transactions, then this news is important for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced a major change in UPI to enhance security and prevent fraud related to transactions. From October 1, 2025, NPCI is going to discontinue Person to Person (P2P) collect requests. The move is aimed at preventing fraudsters from inadvertently allowing users to make payments.

This “collect request” or “pull transaction” feature allowed users to demand money from another person through the UPI platform. While the feature was originally designed for convenient use, like reminding friends of debt or splitting bills, it has become a tool for fraudsters and other malicious people.

Fraudsters often sent these requests under the pretext of a fake role or demand, forcing users to accept it. If the user approves it without understanding the situation, they lose the money immediately.

NPCI discontinues the payment request feature from October 1

In an official circular issued on July 29, NPCI directed banks and payment apps to stop processing all P2P collect transactions from October 1. It is worth noting that these types of fraud have reduced in recent years, especially due to NPCI limiting the transaction value to around ₹2,000. However, with the complete removal of this feature, NPCI aims to completely eliminate this type of fraud.

Therefore, the only way to transact through UPI will be for the sender to scan the QR code or select a contact and enter the UPI PIN to complete the transaction.

What will be the impact on Zomato, Amazon, and IRCTC bill payments?

Note that this change will not affect merchant transactions. Services like Flipkart, Amazon, Swiggy, and IRCTC will still be able to send collect requests to customers so that they can complete purchases from their portals. These requests are a standard part of the checkout process and require user approval and UPI PIN to complete the payment, making it a secure and controlled transaction type.

NPCI has clarified that after the October 1 deadline, all member banks and UPI apps will not be allowed to initiate, route, or process these P2P collect transactions.
