Leptospirosis: Monsoon’s increasing problem

Rain and leptospirosis in Mumbai: As soon as the monsoon arrives, the risk of diseases and infections increases. Mumbai has seen an increase in vector -borne diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya. Along with this, cases of leptospirosis have also increased during the rainy season. In recent months, there has been a significant increase in cases of dengue and leptospirosis in Mumbai.

Leptospirosis becomes a common problem during rains. Experts say that heavy waterlogging occurs due to many reasons such as drainage problems, high tides, construction sites, slums and soil deficiency. In addition, infection of mice is also a major cause of increase in cases of this disease.

People who do not know about the disease are necessary to tell them that leptospirosis is a bacterial infection, usually producing symptoms like flu. This is caused by leptospaira bacteria and can infect both humans and animals.


What is leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis usually spreads by exposure to contaminated water or soil. Urine or body water and soil of infected animals can contaminate, especially during heavy rains. This disease can spread by touching the liquids of an infected animal or consuming infected food or water.

Symptoms of leptospirosis

Symptoms of leptospirosis are usually similar to flu. However, some individuals may not show any symptoms. Experts say that in mild cases, there may be high fever and body pain, especially calves and eye pain. Severe symptoms include cough, dark yellow urination, difficulty in breathing and vomiting. If it is not treated, it can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, difficulty in breathing and even death.

In some cases, symptoms like flu may change to veal syndrome, which is a serious condition. These symptoms can appear after three to ten days, including bleeding in cough, chest pain, urination, red spots on the skin and the decrease in urination.

Measures to prevent leptospirosis

  1. Stay away from reservoirs during heavy rains or floods, as they can be contaminated by animals.
  2. Wear rubber shoes and gloves and protect your skin from exposure to contaminated soil or water.
  3. After exposure to soil or water, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  4. To avoid mice, keep the environment around you clean and keep the food in sealed containers.
  5. Drink only boiled water, especially if you live in potential areas of leptospirosis.
  6. Consult a vet to apply vaccines of leptospirosis to pets.
