Maharashtra traffic challan: The Maharashtra government is preparing to implement an amnesty scheme (waiver scheme) for disposal of pending traffic challans across the state. Under this scheme, vehicle owners will be able to clear their old challans through one-time settlement (lump sum payment). The government believes that this step will not only make it easier to collect arrears but will also provide great relief to the citizens.

Outside ₹ 2,500 crore, Mumbai is the highest

According to official data, the state has a total traffic penalty of more than ₹ 2,500 crore. Out of these, there is more than ₹ 1,000 crore pending in Mumbai alone. According to the report, so far about ₹ 1,817 crore e-challan has been issued in Mumbai, but only ₹ 817 crore could be recovered from them. The government is now seriously considering this new scheme to recover the remaining amount.

Big relief to two-wheeler and three-wheeler owners

The biggest benefit of this scheme is going to be available to small vehicle owners. According to reports, two and three wheel vehicles can be given a discount of up to 75%. That is, vehicle owners will have to deposit only 25% amount. In addition, if a driver pays within 15 days of getting the challan, he can get a profit of 50% discount. The government believes that this will develop the habit of filling the challan among the people on time.

Low discount on luxury vehicles

While two-wheelers and three-wheeler drivers will be given great relief, the owners of luxury cars and expensive vehicles will get less discounts. It is being told that the government will decide the category of exemption on the basis of the price and category of the vehicle. Its aim is that more expensive vehicles can be charged proper penalty and government revenue should also increase.

Try has been done before

Earlier, the government had tried to recover the arrears through Lok Adalats, in which the invoices were given a discount of up to 50%. However, people’s participation in that plan was low. Now the government hopes that the new One-Time Settlement Scheme will attract more drivers and the arrears will also be rapid.

Note

This new scheme of Maharashtra government is reported to be relief for those who break traffic rules. If it is approved, millions of vehicle owners will be able to deal with their pending invoices easily. At the same time, additional revenue will also come in the treasury of the government.
