Mumbai: Karva Chauth holds immense cultural and religious significance in the Hindu tradition. Considered one of the most important fasts for married women, it is observed with great devotion across India. On this day, women dress in solah shringar (sixteen adornments) and keep a day-long fast, praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands.
Falling in the month of Kartik, Karva Chauth usually arrives 10 to 11 days before Diwali. The fast is observed on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi tithi, and women break their fast only after sighting the moon and offering arghya (water) to it with an earthen pot, known as karva.
Significance of Karva ChauthKarva Chauth is not just a ritual but a celebration of marital love and devotion. Married women undertake this fast from sunrise to moonrise without food or water. The ritual is also known as Karaka Chaturthi. The word Karva means earthen pot, symbolising prosperity, while Chauth refers to the fourth day of the lunar fortnight.
By observing this fast, women seek blessings for eternal marital bliss, health, and prosperity. It is believed to bring akhand saubhagya (unbroken good fortune) for married women.
