The BCCI has named the 15-member India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on August 19, where Shubman Gill is set to return to the T20I format and has been named as the vice-captain.
He will be occupying no. 3 slot with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma named as designated openers. Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the T20I side, and head selector Ajit Agarkar reckoned that when the full-strength side played against Sri Lanka last year.
Gill’s return means Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were the unfortunate ones to miss out, while Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi were snubbed as well. If Gill opens, Samson will be sitting out and Jitesh Sharma will shoulder the wk-duties.
Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana formed the three-man pace attack, while Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube will be the pace-bowling all-rounder for the tournament.
Jitesh Sharma has also returned to the side after a fantastic season in the IPL for the eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) while Rinku Singh retained his place as the designated finisher in the side.
This will be India’s first T20I assignment since the England series in January-February earlier this year.
Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel will be the mainstay in the spin department.
India will start their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Stadium, followed by the high octane clash against Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue.
India enter the tournament as the defending champions and are the most successful team in the competition. The Men in Blues will eyeing their ninth title in this edition of the tournament.
