
Legendary Pakistani people Singer Attaullah Khan Esakhelviknown lovingly as “Lala” by millions, has turned 74marking over five decades of musical brilliance that echoes far beyond the borders of Pakistan. Born on August 19, 1951in the small town of SakhelPunjab, Attaullah’s journey from rural stages to international acclaim is nothing short of inspirational.
From a young age, music ran in his blood — but not everyone in his family welcomed it. His father’s disapproval of his passion forced him to leave home early in life, but that very hardship shaped the path that would one day define Pakistan’s folk music legacy.
Attaullah’s formal career began in 1972 with Radio Pakistan Bahawalpurand within just a year, his voice began turning heads with performances on PTV’s “Neelam Ghar” and local concerts in Mianwali. However, it was in 1977 that his true breakthrough came. In a single recording session in Faisalabadhe recorded four folk albums — and once released, these songs became a cultural phenomenon, echoing from fields to city streets across the country.
His hits like “Aye Thewa Mundri da Thewa” and the haunting “Chan kithan guzari aayi raat way” didn’t just win hearts — they became anthems of longing, love, and resilience. Over the years, Attaullah recorded over 50,000 songs in seven languagesmaking him a global ambassador of Pakistani folk music. This incredible feat earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1994.
In 1991he was honoured with the Pride of Performance award by the Government of Pakistan, recognizing not just his artistic brilliance but his role in shaping national identity through music.
Despite the glamour of his success, Attaullah has remained deeply connected to his roots. His voice still carries the same rural charm and emotional depth that first won over village gatherings — and later, the world.
Even today, Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi is not just a singer — he is the voice of the common mana timeless storyteller, and a living legend who continues to inspire generations through the power of song.
