The Lonavla Municipal Council has declared a two-day holiday for all schools within its limits on August 20 and 21 after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the ghat regions of Pune district, reported TOI.
In an official notification, Municipal Council CEO Ashok Sabale confirmed that all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools will remain closed. He clarified, however, that no decision has yet been taken regarding colleges.
"We received a request from the education department, following which a decision was taken to declare a holiday for two days," Sabale told TOI.
Sabale noted that the situation in Lonavla remains under control with no significant incidents of flooding or waterlogging reported so far. Civic staff have nevertheless been directed to remain on high alert.
Meanwhile, a road leading to the popular tourist spot Lion’s Point has been shut after the Bhushi dam overflowed, causing flooding. IMD data shows that Lonavla recorded 189 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The city witnessed major disruptions as Central Railway services on both its main and harbour lines were hit due to waterlogged tracks. Flight operations also faced delays and cancellations. Government offices, schools, and colleges were closed, while the Bombay High Court wound up proceedings by 12:30 pm owing to the downpour.
According to the Maharashtra Disaster Management Department, heavy rains and flood-related incidents claimed six lives across the state in the past 24 hours. Five people are reported missing in flood-like conditions in Nanded district.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with 18 NDRF teams and 6 SDRF teams deployed. In Mukhed taluka of Nanded, SDRF rescued 293 people. Reported fatalities include one person in Beed, one dead and three injured in Mumbai, and four dead with five missing in Nanded.
