Coolie makers approach Madras High Court against A tag for Rajinikanth’s film

The battle over Rajinikanth's much-anticipated film 'Coolie' has moved to the Madras High Court, with Sun Pictures contesting the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) decision to issue the film an 'A' certificate.
The certification, which bars viewers under 18, has drawn objections from the producers, who argue the film has been unfairly judged when compared to similar big-ticket releases.
On August 19, Justice TV Thamilselvi admitted the petition and directed that it be listed for hearing the following day. Sun Pictures maintains that 'Coolie' contains action sequences on par with films such as 'KGF' and 'Beast', both of which were cleared with a U/A certificate, yet has been subjected to harsher classification.
The courtroom exchange saw Central government counsel A Kumaraguru claim the plea was not maintainable. However, senior advocate J Ravindran, assisted by M Sneha, countered successfully, pointing out that under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021 (which dissolved the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal), the High Court has jurisdiction to hear such appeals.
Despite multiple representations to the CBFC for a U/A rating, both the examining and revising committees upheld the 'A' classification, citing the film's depiction of violence.
Sun Pictures, however, has stressed that Rajinikanth's fandom spans generations, and younger audiences form a vital part of the celebrations around the superstar's milestone release. They argue that keeping children and teenagers out of theatres undermines the spirit of the film, envisioned as a mass entertainer.
Many theatres across Tamil Nadu saw parents involving in a fight with theatre owners to allow children inside the hall.
Produced on a massive budget, brings together an ensemble featuring Nagarjuna Akkineni and Aamir Khan. The film was released as Rajinikanth completed 50 years in cinema.
