Afghanistan Bus Accident: 73 people killed in bus accident in Afghanistan, mostly deported people from Iran

Afghanistan Bus Accident: In western Afghanistan, a passenger bus carrying deported refugees from neighboring country Iran caught fire after a truck and motorcycle collision, killing at least 71 people, including 17 children. According to reports, the police of Herat province said on Tuesday that the accident was caused by the “excessive speed and negligence” of the bus.

Provincial Governor’s spokesman Mohammad Yusuf Saeedi said that the passengers were Afghan migrants who boarded a bus in the border city of Islam Qala. According to the police, the bus driver has held the bus responsible for this tragedy by driving the bus with high speed and carelessness.

These returning people have been part of a large wave of Afghanis deported or expelled from Iran in recent months.

The bus was going to the capital Kabul recently with Afghan citizens who returned from Iran. He further explained that all the passengers boarded the bus at Islam Kala, a border point.

The accident occurred a day after the announcement made by Iran’s Home Minister Eskander Momani, stating that 800,000 more people would have to leave the country by next March.

Millions of Afghans have fled to Iran and Pakistan since the 1970s-during the Soviet occupation in 1979 and then after the Taliban came to power in 2021. Afghan migrants in Iran often face institutional discrimination and increasing enmity.
