The Government of India has issued an important cybersecurity warning to those working in offices. The Information Security Awareness Team (ISEA) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has advised people to avoid using WhatsApp Web on office laptops or computers.

The government says that running WhatsApp Web on an office device can expose your personal conversations, files, and other sensitive information to your employer or IT team. This can pose a threat not only to your privacy but also to the company's data security.

How can information be leaked?

According to the advisory, when WhatsApp Web is used, IT administrators or monitoring software can access your chats and files. This risk is further increased through screen-monitoring tools, malware, browser hijacking, or phishing attacks. Many companies are now considering it a serious threat to network security.

The warning also states that even if you use WhatsApp on your mobile on office Wi-Fi, your data security can be at risk. The company's network system can access some information on your phone.

Increasing concern of companies

Nowadays, cases of cyber attacks, data theft, and phishing are increasing continuously. Due to this, many organizations are looking at WhatsApp Web as an easy means of malware and hacking. Once the network is breached, the security of the entire system can be in danger.

Tips to stay safe

If you are forced to use WhatsApp Web on an office laptop or PC, then the government has suggested some security measures -

Always log out of WhatsApp Web before getting up from the desk.

Do not open any link or file received from an unknown number without checking it.

Use updated antivirus and security tools in the system.
