Google will pay $30 million in damages to settle a lawsuit claiming that it violated the privacy of children using YouTube. The case has been filed by the parents of 34 children, alleging that personal information of children was collected without parental consent and used to send targeted advertising.

Alphabet paid a fine of $170 million in 2019
Google's parent company, Alphabet, agreed in 2019 to pay a fine of $170 million and change some policies to settle similar allegations leveled by the US Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General Letitia James. However, some people said that this punishment was too light for Google.

Parents accused Google of violating laws.

Now the parents of 34 children have again filed a lawsuit against Google. They allege that Google allowed content providers to help collect personal information even after the 2019 settlement. By showing cartoons, nursery rhymes and other content to children, their privacy was tampered with and dozens of laws were violated.

The proposed class includes American children under the age of 13

The proposed class includes American children under the age of 13 who watched YouTube between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020. Plaintiffs' lawyers estimate that about 35 to 45 million children may be involved in this case. If only 1% to 2% of these children file a claim, they can get 30 to 60 dollars each (after deducting expenses and fees).

Lawyers will take $9 million as legal fees.
Lawyers have said that they will take up to $9 million from this settlement as legal fees. Meanwhile, Alphabet reported that in the first half of 2025, the company collected revenue of $186.7 billion and earned a net profit of $62.7 billion.
