
New Delhi: Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over usage of foul language during the first ODI match between Australia and South Africa on Tuesday. Zampa was found guilty of violating the ICC Code of Conduct as reported by the global governing body.
In the report from the ICC, it has been stated that the Australian spinner has been reprimanded for breaching Article 2.3, which relates to the use of an audible obscenity during an international match. This type of offence is a level 1 offence and it carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and maximum penalty of 50 per cent of match fees.
Zampa accepts sanction
Apart from the reprimand, a player is also handed one or two demerit points and Zampa has been given one demerit point. Meanwhile, the incident happened when Zampa apparently lost his cool a fielder’s misfield and overthrow off hos bowling. The cricketer has accepted the official sanction handed to him by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
Meanwhile, South Africa registered an emphatic victory over Australia in the series opener on August 19. the Proteas thrashed the Aussies by 98 runs after posting a mammoth total of 298 batting first. Lethal batter Aiden Markram was the leading scorer for the team. Though the pitch was aiding the slow bowlers but Zampa failed to get much off it excepting a lone wicket while Travis Head bagged four.
The more it was comfortable for the South Africans in the first innings, the more struggling it became for the Australians in the second half. Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj led the bowlers show claiming a five-wicket haul while Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi claimed two wickets apiece to bowl out Australia for just 198 runs. The second ODI will be played on Friday.
