Mumbai: Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India’s most vibrant and widely celebrated festivals. The ten-day celebration sees devotees across the country welcoming Lord Ganesha into their homes with devotion, music, and joy. Streets are filled with colourful processions, the fragrance of modaks fills the air, and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya” echo everywhere.

According to the Drik Panchang, Ganesh Chaturthi in 2025 will be observed on Wednesday, 27 August 2025. The festival will begin with the installation of Lord Ganesha’s idol (Sthapana) and conclude on 6 September 2025, which falls on Anant Chaturdashi, when the idols are immersed in water. Devotees believe that Lord Ganesha brings wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune, but for the puja to be truly fruitful, certain rules must be followed during his installation and worship.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Shubh Muhurat

The Chaturthi Tithi will begin on 26 August 2025 at 1:54 PM and end on 27 August 2025 at 3:44 PM.

The most auspicious time for Ganesh Sthapana and Puja is on the morning or early afternoon of 27 August 2025.

Ganesh Visarjan will take place on 6 September 2025 (Anant Chaturdashi).

Important rules to follow for ganesh sthapana

Idol and Trunk Direction

Always choose an idol with Lord Ganesha’s trunk bent towards the left side. This is considered highly auspicious and easier to worship at home.

Idols with the trunk on the right side represent the Siddhivinayak form and require strict rituals.

Purity and Placement

Clean the puja space thoroughly and sprinkle it with Ganga Jal before placing the idol.

Never place the idol directly on the ground. Use a clean wooden platform or chowki draped with a red or yellow cloth.

The idol should ideally be made of clay (mitti), as scriptures consider this the most sacred.

Muhurat and Direction

Install the idol only during Chaturthi Tithi. Avoid late-night installation.

Place the idol facing the north-east (Ishan Kona) direction, regarded as the most auspicious for worship.

Idol Size

For home puja, always keep a small idol that can be easily immersed during Visarjan.

Puja Rituals

Perform Abhishek of the idol with water, milk, or panchamrit.

Chant the Pran Pratishtha Mantra to invoke divine presence in the idol.

Offer Sindoor (vermilion) and Durva grass, which hold special significance in Ganesh Puja.

Present modaks as prasad, as they are believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet.

Daily Worship

Perform Aarti, mantra chanting, and prasad offering twice daily for all ten days.

Many devotees observe fasts (vrat), either with fruits (phalahar) or without water (nirjala), especially women who pray for their family’s prosperity and children’s well-being.

Following these traditional rules ensures that your Ganesh Chaturthi puja is performed correctly, inviting blessings of wisdom, happiness, and success into your home.
