Rising inflation has many of us on the lookout for safe places to park our cash while still earning a decent return. The Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) from the Post Office checks both boxes. It promises to double your money over a set term, with the safety of a government guarantee.
KVP first launched in 1988 to motivate people—mainly in the countryside and smaller towns—to invest for the long haul. Because the program is backed by the Indian government, you can invest knowing your principal is safe.
You can start with as little as ₹1,000, and there’s no cap on how much you can put in, so both budget savers and large investors find a home here. The scheme has a rate of 7.5% per year, compounded annually. That compounding means your money will double in about 115 months, or just under 10 years. For instance, if you park ₹8,000 today, you’ll collect ₹16,000 when the term ends.
To get started with a Kisan Vikas Patra investment, just visit the closest post office or any bank branch that’s authorized to handle these accounts. You’ll need to complete a straightforward form with your name, address, mobile number, the amount you want to invest, how you’ll be paying, and the name of a nominee. Bring along a reliable proof of identity and address, like your Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, passport, or driving license. If you’re putting in ₹50,000 or less, you can pay in cash. Anything above that must be paid using a cheque, demand draft, or online transfer like NEFT or RTGS. After staff confirm your details, you’ll get a Kisan Vikas Patra investment certificate.
Some extra paperwork is needed based on your investment amount. If you invest more than ₹50,000, a PAN card is a must. For amounts above ₹10 lakh, you’ll also need to submit income proof, like a salary slip, a bank statement, or a tax return.
Let’s say you invest ₹5,000. Since interest is compounded yearly, that amount will double to ₹10,000 in 115 months. That makes Kisan Vikas Patra a great choice if you want a safe place to park your money and get steady returns over several years.
