Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi have been summoned by a Pune Civil Court in connection with a petition filed against their upcoming film Jolly LLB 3, scheduled for release on September 19.
Advocates Wajed Khan (Bidkar) and Ganesh Mhaskhe filed a petition alleging that the film's teaser portrays lawyers and judges in a disrespectful manner. They claimed that, under the guise of creative liberty, the actors and filmmakers had mocked the legal profession by using indecent humour. Taking cognisance of the matter, 12th Junior Division Civil Judge JG Pawar issued summonses to the actors and the film's producers, directing them to appear in court on August 28. The petitioners have also sought a restraining order on the release of the film. The controversy arose after the teaser showed Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi promoting the film while wearing lawyer's bands, which the petitioners argued tarnishes the dignity of the profession. "In this film, all lawyers refer to judges as 'Mamu'. This is an insult to the judiciary", Wajed Khad told India Today. "Moreover, lawyers are shown arguing in court as if it were a family quarrel. Even if this is meant to be satirical, it is offensive to the entire legal community," one of the petitioner lawyers added. As the hearing date approaches, Jolly LLB 3 finds itself entangled in a legal battle even before its theatrical release.
