Strengthening Ties: EAM Jaishankar's Visit to Russia

Moscow: On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with notable Russian scholars and think tank members to discuss the bilateral relationship between India and Russia, the shifting global geopolitical landscape, and India's stance during his three-day official trip to Russia.

Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction on X, stating, “It was a pleasure to engage with distinguished scholars and think tank representatives from Russia. We discussed India-Russia relations, current global geopolitics, and India's perspective.”

He also paid tribute by laying a wreath at the 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' located in Moscow’s Alexander Garden, a memorial honoring Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in World War II.

The minister is set to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) in Moscow, which aims to enhance bilateral relations further.

Jaishankar's visit is at the invitation of Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the strategic importance of this visit, stating, “The objective is to reinforce the enduring and time-honored India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”

During his visit, Jaishankar will also engage in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, continuing the trend of high-level exchanges between the two nations.

The two leaders had previously met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ meeting on July 15 and at the recent BRICS Summit.

Earlier this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Moscow for consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Moscow.

These visits set the stage for a potential high-level meeting, as Russian President Vladimir Putin is anticipated to visit India later this year following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
