New Delhi: Gold deposits have been found in Odishas Deogarh (Adasa-Rampali) Sundargarh Nabarangpur Keonjhar Angul and Koraput districts. According to the reports exploration work is also underway in Mayurbhanj Malkangiri Sambalpur and Boudh. Odishas Mining Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena informed the Assembly that gold reserves have been discovered in the state. There is no official information yet on how much gold exists in Odisha’s mines. However geologists estimate that there could be around 10 to 20 tonnes of gold and the actual quantity may be even higher. Here are some of the key details: The Odisha government in collaboration with the Odisha Mining Corporation and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is planning to utilize these reserves. Preparations are underway for the auction of a gold mining block in Deogarh marking a major step forward for Odisha’s mineral sector. GSI has started work in areas like Adasa-Rampalli and Gopur-Gazipur where gold mines may also exist. Infrastructure like roads electricity and water facilities will be developed in these regions. Employment opportunities will increase in mining transportation and local services. Story Highlights: India imports about 700–800 tonnes of gold from other countries every year Domestic gold production is very low. In 2020 India produced only 1.6 tonnes of gold. The discovery of gold in Odisha will not bring a major change in India’s overall gold situation The discovery of Gold will increase domestic production and bring more diversity to the economy. Odisha already holds a leading position with 96 percent of India’s chromite reserves 52 percent of bauxite and 33 percent of iron ore. If gold is mined successfully it will be a matter of pride for the state. The government is conducting the auction of the gold mine site in accordance with the rules of the MMDR Act.
