India Selector to Lose His Job: But Why?

India Selector to Lose His Job: The Board of Control for Cricket in India is preparing to alter the composition of its senior selection committee, with one member expected to make way at September’s annual general meeting. S Sharath, elevated from the junior panel in January 2023, is understood to be nearing the BCCI’s four-year limit for selection roles, and is therefore the likeliest to be replaced.

The present committee consists of chairman Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and Sharath. By most accounts the board has been satisfied with its functioning, and change is expected to be limited to that single position.

India Selector to Lose His Job, But Agarkar Will Continue Till 2026

In the meantime, Agarkar’s own position has been strengthened. His contract as chief selector has been extended quietly until June 2026, a decision taken earlier this year but disclosed only this week—two days after India’s Asia Cup squad was announced.

Agarkar has overseen a period of transition since his appointment in June 2023. Under his stewardship, India ended a decade of frustration at ICC tournaments, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in early 2025, while also falling just short in the 2023 home ODI World Cup. His committee has managed the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R. Ashwin from various formats, while handing leadership of the Test and T20I sides to Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav respectively.

Broader Reshuffle

The BCCI is also expected to refresh its senior women’s and junior men’s panels. Neetu David and her colleagues Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee complete their five-year tenures this season, while the junior selection committee may also be reconstituted before the next cycle of international commitments.

For Indian cricket’s selectors, permanence remains elusive-Agarkar excepted.
