According to Dainik Jagran, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is allegedly considering Shreyas Iyer as Rohit Sharma’s successor for India’s ODI captaincy, who will probably lead the team in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. Iyer’s brilliant performance and leadership ability has established him as a prominent candidate in the current change of Indian cricket.

The 30 -year -old Iyer performed brilliantly in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he scored 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.6 and overtook veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. His ODI record – 2,845 runs, including five centuries at an average of 48.22 in 70 matches, further strengthens his claim. His captaincy skills displayed by Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 IPL title and Punjab Kings to the IPL final of 2025 have further strengthened his claim.

38 -year -old Rohit Sharma, who has retired from Test and T20I, can play his last ODI during India’s October 2025 tour. The BCCI is planning to discuss the future of him and Virat Kohli after the Asia Cup, if Rohit leaves the post, the potential leadership is changing.

Shubman Gill, who was at the forefront of the captaincy of all formats in the beginning, is out for the ODI role due to the concerns of the workload. The leadership of the India’s Test team and acting as the T20 I vice-captain, Gill faces a busy program, giving the selectors preferred Iyer for ODIs to avoid fatigue.
