Scottie Scheffler shows true colours with Ted Scott comments after he missed £267,000 payday

Scottie Scheffler has highlighted just how much Ted Scott means to him after the world No. 1's caddie was absent for Sunday's BMW Championship triumph due to personal matters. Earlier this month at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scott was forced to make an unexpected departure before the final round.

He returned to his home in Louisiana, USA, to handle a family issue. He remained there last week, too, which meant missing Scheffler's fifth victory of the year.

The four-time major winner rallied on the last day to overcome Bob MacIntyre by two strokes at Caves Valley, securing fill-in caddie Michael Cromie a pay cheque of roughly £267,000. Scott, who helped Bubba Watson capture two Masters titles, teamed up with Scheffler in late 2021 when the Texas native was still seeking his first PGA Tour win.

The veteran caddie, with 26 years of experience, has played a pivotal role in elevating Scheffler's career. Since their partnership began, Scheffler has collected 17 PGA Tour titles, four of them majors, firmly establishing himself as the top player in the world.

Sunday's success in Maryland marked the first time Scheffler claimed a PGA Tour victory without Scott alongside him. While Cromie performed admirably, Scheffler made it clear that there's only one caddie he truly wants.

Scott has rejoined him this week at East Lake in Atlanta, where the Tour Championship begins on Thursday, and Scheffler expressed his appreciation for the reunion during his media availability. "It's extremely important to have Ted back on the bag," he said.

"I don't think it's any secret that my career trajectory changed quite a bit when he came on the bag. I went from a guy that hadn't won on Tour to a guy that started winning at a pretty good pace immediately upon him entering the picture.

"I think what Ted has meant to me on the golf course, I think the results really do speak for themselves. He's a great asset for me on the golf course. He's a great friend, and I feel like we're a really good team. He works super hard. He has a relentless work ethic as well.

"There's a lot more to a great caddie than just giving me really good numbers all the time. Teddy has a lot of different roles on the course, and it's great to have him back this week.

"Obviously, he's got some personal stuff still going on that I'm not going to elaborate on, but it's really great to have him back on the bag this week."

Scheffler leads the FedEx Cup standings comfortably after five wins this season, including major triumphs at the PGA Championship and at The Open. However, a revamped format at East Lake means he no longer starts with a scoring edge.

Instead, all 30 participants will begin at even par in Atlanta, scrapping the previous system that would have had Scheffler open at 10-under, two shots clear of Rory McIlroy.
