Arsenal can add £40m player after Eberechi Eze transfer and Andrea Berta masterplan
Football | August 21, 2025 9:39 PM CST

Arsenal are eyeing up a surprise move for Lyon forward Malick Fofana before the end of the summer, it has been claimed. The Gunners are in the market for more attacking players and have identified Fofana as a potential target after impressing during his breakthrough 2024/2025 season.

Fofana, 20, who joined Lyon in a £14.7million plus add-ons deal from Gent in January 2024, scored 11 times and provided six assists in 41 appearances last campaign. He appears to have continued on his form into 2025/2026, too, as he set up Georges Mikautadze's winner as Lyon beat Lens 1-0 last Saturday.

Now, it has emerged that Mikel Arteta's side are weighing up an ambitious swoop for the Belgium international. According to L'Equipe, Arsenal, alongside Bayern Munich, are looking into a potential deal for Fofana.

The talented Belgian is said to be available for around £34.6million - so a fraction less than his £40m CIES Football Observatory market value - as Lyon are under pressure to bring in some money from player sales.

Liverpool and Chelsea have shown previous interest in Fofana and he's among the most exciting young wingers in European football right now, having produced some excellent performances for Lyon.

Fofana could become the next Arsenal attacking reinforcement once Eberechi Eze's proposed £68m transfer is signed and sealed. The Gunners have reached an agreement in principle to sign the England international - from Crystal Palace - after they hijacked Tottenham's move for the 27-year-old attacking midfielder.

football.london understands Spurs held further talks with Palace for Eze on Wednesday before Arsenal swooped in and made a last-ditch attempt to bring Eze to the red half of north London. It's a ploy that has worked, with Eze making it clear that his preference is Arsenal and he has since agreed personal terms.

Eze is expected to play for Palace against Fredrikstad in the Conference League play-off on Thursday night, before undergoing a medical with Arsenal. Should the transfer get rubber-stamped by Friday (12pm), Eze could feature for the Gunners when they host Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday.

If Eze doesn't play against Leeds this weekend, his likely debut will be at Anfield, as the Gunners head to Liverpool for an eye-catching top-flight affair on Sunday, August 31.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and vice-chairman Tim Lewis have led the process of getting a deal agreed for Eze, who is set to become the club's seventh signing of the summer transfer window.

The ex-QPR player is anticipated to follow Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres to north London.
